English version

In may 1945, the first infantery division of the U.S. Army, the famous BIG RED ONE, fought his last battle in Europe, in the Sudetanland (Czechoslovakia), liberating the concentration camp at Falkenau.

Among the soldiers was Samuel Fuller, who films this episode (in 16 mm B.W. silent). This unique document is shown for the first time as part of « Falkenau – The impossible ».

After a brief introduction describing the liberation of the camp, and the way it was filmed, Samuel Fuller adds a running commentary to images he recorded more than forty years ago. « It is the only film in which we see civilians in a camp doing such things. It is the first and the last time that this happened during the war. »

In the final sequence of the film, we hear a great cinema director considering problems which have preoccuped him throughout his career : to what extent can an image be honest ; how is it possible to RE-PRESENT the universe of the concentration camp; and how does one engaged in the necessary transmission of this reality to the younger generation.
