Sous le nom d’« Auschwitz » se cache un vaste complexe qui regroupe une myriade d’installations très diverses disséminées sur un territoire de plus de 40 km2.
Outre les trois camps principaux, Auschwitz I (camp de concentration), Auschwitz II Birkenau (camp de concentration mais aussi le plus grand centre de mise à mort) et Auschwitz III Monowitz (camp de travail), on trouve dans ce périmètre appelé par les nazis « zone d’intérêt » plusieurs usines, des fermes agricoles, des camps annexes, des centres de recherches, un vaste projet d’urbanisme et de nombreuses autres installations qui participent au fonctionnement de cette ensemble.
A l’extérieur de ce périmètre de 40 km2, le « Complexe » d’Auschwitz se prolonge avec une trentaine des camps annexes, avec dans leurs proximités des usines et des mines.

En scrutant les nombreux vestiges existants sur le terrain, Auschwitz Projekt présente la première opération de grande envergure visant l’aménagement territorial de l’Europe de l’Est annexé au Grand Reich.
Auschwitz est en réalité l’immanence même du projet hitlérien. Convergent ici l’application de toutes les politiques mises en œuvre par l’Etat nazi inspirées par deux obsessions irréductibles du Führer : le « Lebensraum », la conquête de « l’espace vitale » du l’Est européen, traité par ce documentaire et le projet racial, l’extermination des « races » considérés inférieurs , sujet resté à développer dans un deuxième volet dédié à l’exploration d’Auschwitz II Birkenau.

The name “Auschwitz” in fact covers a vast complex comprising a multitude of very diverse installations scattered over an area of more than 40 square kilometres. In addition to the three main camps – the concentration camp Auschwitz I, the concentration and also death camp Auschwitz II Birkenau and the work camp Auschwitz III Monowitz – within this perimeter the Nazis called the “zone of interest” there existed several factories, farms, sub-camps, research centres, a vast town and country planning project and numerous other facilities, each playing a part in the operation as a whole.
Outside the bounds of this 40km2 perimeter, the Auschwitz « Complex » extends to some thirty additional camps with nearby factories and mines.

Searching among the many vestiges that remain on the site, « Auschwitz Projekt » presents the first large-scale operation aimed at the spatial planning of Eastern Europe annexed to the Great Reich.Auschwitz is in fact the very essence of Hitler’s plan, the point of convergence of all the policies implemented by the Nazi State, inspired by the Führer’s two intractable obsessions: « Lebensraum », the conquest of the « vital space » in Eastern Europe, dealt with in this documentary, and the racial project, extermination of the « races » deemed inferior, a subject that remains to be treated in the second part (dedicated to an exploration of Auschwitz II-Birkenau).
