When in the late 1960s, the generation born after World War II began to hold their elders to account and they wanted to know , concerning the history of their ancestors , what had been covered up by silence and repression, one source was of paramount importance : the writings of Leon Poliakov on Nazism, genocide, anti-Semitism and racism.

“The Breviary of Hate”, published in 1951, “The history of anti-Semitism” (4 volumes published between 1956 and 1977, then a fifth collective volume in 1994) “Le mythe aryen” (1971), “La causalité diabolique ”(2 volumes in 1980 and 1986), are some of the titles of an essential work for the understanding of a fundamental part of contemporary history, inaugural studies that have not aged a bit.

The modesty and a kind of immediate bonhomie which characterize Mr. Poliakov, makes his person particularly endearing, but this congenital restraint was also the main concern in making this film: how to highlight a great introvert who distrusts appearances and is content to perfect his work, immense, in a three-room apartment in HLM in Massy?

This monograph, the only existing documentary film on Leon Poliakov, shows the original journey of an insightful and innovative researcher, who enjoys worldwide recognition, especially among his fellow historians, then and now.
