Rencontre avec Samuel Fuller
Dans ce film, Samuel Fuller retrace l’itinéraire de sa vie, le journalisme, la guerre, puis le cinéma , plus particulièrement appréhendé au travers des films traitant du racisme aux U.S.A. : « Shock corridor », « Crimson kimono », « Le jugement des flèches », « Dressé pour tuer ». Celui qui reste un des premiers « indépendants » du cinéma américain évoque ses idées sur l’écriture, la production, le choix des acteurs et de la musique, et sa conception du cinéma, de l’histoire, de l’homme. Le tournage du film s’est déroulé à travers l’Europe. Nous suivons Samuel Fuller de Paris à Prague, en passant par Nuremberg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Cheb et Sokolov.
Bien que le film obéisse à une construction chronologique et thématique, intégrant notamment une documentation photographique et cinématographique, il nous a semblé important de cerner la personnalité de Fuller dans l’espace – temps propre à la tradition orale d’un conteur-né : « Je suis un conteur… Tout raconte une histoire, les histoires sont la sève de nos civilisations et sans elle, nous n’aurions plus d’enfance. »

Encounters with Samuel Fuller
With all the talent of a born story-teller, Sam Fuller maps out for us the routes and contours of his life’s work. We find ourselves irresistably drawn into this account, accompanying him as he goes from journalism to war and becomes increasingly involved in the world of cinema. Along the way, we learn of his views on – among other things – the art of writng, cinema production, and the choice of subject matter when it comes to making a film. At every turn, Fuller’s focal point is human consciousness. This is particularly clear when it comes to the theme of racism, which has a long hard look at in films such as « Shock Corridor », « Crimson Kimono », « Run of the Arrow », « White Dog » and « China Gate ».
« Tell me Sam » was shot in various European locations, from Paris to Prague with stop at Nuremberg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Cheb and Sokolov, each of these places having a special signification for Fuller. To enrich our understanging of his itinary, the narrative is interspersed with film extracts, photographs and stills. Sam Fuller is to this day one of Hollywood’s most important independent film-makers. Anyone who doesn’t already know of him will come away from this film with an idea of his exceptional stature.
